MADISON, Ind. — Authorities in Madison say a fire that heavily damaged the 154-year-old Jefferson County Courthouse last month was accidental.

Investigators said Monday that a contractor who was soldering two sections of pipe accidentally started the fire in a wooden part of the roof.

The courthouse was being remodeled, which included repair and replacement of copper downspouts and gutters.

The May 20 fire destroyed the courthouse’s dome-topped bell tower, which collapsed into the third floor. County Attorney Wil Goering said last month the southeastern Indiana county intends to rebuild the courthouse, which sits at the center of the city about 40 miles northeast of Louisville, Ky.
